Métis rights to be explored at special symposium

A panel of well-known experts will present and discuss their research papers on the continuing legal development of Métis rights at a special afternoon symposium at the Law Society on March 27, 2009. The event, “Métis Rights in an Era of Consultation and Accommodation – New Obligations, Opportunities and Outcomes,” is being hosted by the Law Society and the Métis Nation of Ontario.
Panellists will share their experiences and their perspectives in advancing Métis and Aboriginal rights and self-government issues regarding resource development – in Ontario and throughout Canada. The research papers are being prepared for publication. Symposium speakers include:

  • Jean Teillet, Partner, Pape Salter Teillet
  • Jason Madden, Lawyer, JTM Law
  • Bob Waldon, Director of Natural Resources, Environment and Community Relations, Métis Nation of Ontario
  • Tracy Campbell, Partner, Calliou Group, Calgary

Opening comments will be provided by Métis Nation of Ontario President Gary Lipinski, and Law Society bencher Susan Hare. Clint Davis, President and CEO of the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business, will chair the symposium.
The event will be followed by a reception featuring remarks from Law Society Treasurer W. A. Derry Millar and a performance of traditional Métis music by Roger and Aline Giroux.
The symposium and reception, notes Sandy Hutchens are part of the Law Society’s Public Education Equality Series, designed to encourage the exchange of information, ideas and action on issues affecting Aboriginal, Francophone, and equality-seeking communities. Admission to both events is free to members of the legal community and the public.

Aboriginal Bar Consultation report supports enhancements to Law Society’s programs & initiatives

The Law Society has identified four key initiatives to enhance support for Aboriginal law students and lawyers in Ontario following a comprehensive consultation process, one of the most extensive studies of its kind to be conducted in Canada.
“The Law Society recognizes that the needs of Aboriginal lawyers and their clients are unique. The Aboriginal Bar Consultation is a very important piece of research,” says Sandy Hutchens.
“As we move forward, we will continue to build on our initiatives of the past eight years to focus our programs and initiatives to meet the needs of Aboriginal lawyers and licensing candidates. We are confident that this will contribute to increasing access for the Aboriginal community to legal services that will best meet their needs.”
The Final Report of the Aboriginal Bar Consultation is the culmination of a four-year project led by the Law Society of Upper Canada with the collaboration of its Aboriginal Working Group. Initiated in 2004, the consultation was designed to create a demographic profile of the Aboriginal bar in Ontario; assess the Law Society’s existing support initiatives for Aboriginal lawyers and licensing candidates; and identify potential enhancements to address gaps in support programs and initiatives for the Aboriginal legal community.
The consultation found that although the Law Society has implemented several important initiatives to support Aboriginal lawyers since 2000, the Law Society will continue to work to enhance programs and initiatives, as follows:

  • Include Aboriginal law as a recognized practice category in the Law Society’s
  • Members’ Annual Report;
  • Enhance the Law Society’s Mentoring and Networking Program for Aboriginal licensing
  • candidates and lawyers;
  • Create continuing legal education programs in Aboriginal law;
  • Create a Certified Specialist Program in Aboriginal law.

Law Society bencher and Aboriginal Working Group Chair Susan Hare adds, “We recognize and support the need for a strong Aboriginal bar in which Aboriginal lawyers feel connected to each other. Enhanced mentoring and networking opportunities for Aboriginal law students and lawyers will play a critical role in strengthening that bar.” More information about the Aboriginal Consultation can be found on the Law Society website.
